Ignite A New Passion Couple's Retreat

The last home ever designed by legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright, also known as the Circular Sun House, is up for sale at $8.9 million in Phoenix. Plans for the home, which is built into a hillside, were on Wright’s drawing table when he died in 1959 and the building was finished in 1967 by Wright's apprentice. The 3,000-square-foot residence includes curved walls, built-in furnishings, three bedrooms, three baths, a library and a media room.

The dining and living rooms have walls of windows looking east and lead to a large, semi-covered deck, "which harnesses the full impact of the weather". "The front door, carefully positioned within the foyer, tantalizes with hints of what lies beyond. Stepping around the corner, the space opens up, revealing breathtaking vistas of the water." Known as Rockbound, the 4100-square foot (380-square metre) home sits on a rocky, sloped three-acre site overlooking a bay that connects the property to Peggy's Cove, a national historic site that can be seen across the water.

Additional square footage was also gained after the chimney for the fireplace was removed from the lower level, requiring a massive beam to hold up the rest of the fireplace, which remains in the living room above. When combined, the freed-up space created a media room, a gaming room, two home offices, a guest room and a bar. A 27-foot-wide series of sliding doors that open onto a wooden deck now afford expansive views. Natural light floods the entire space and filters down into the lower floor via a stairway with a glass railing. A 1969 renovation made the building’s street view more modern, but also created “a jumble of rooflines and walls,” said architect David S. Wilson, principal of WA Design. When it was built in 1937, this was one of the first homes in the then sparsely populated hills above the Claremont Hotel and was rumored to have incredibly expansive views of the San Francisco Bay.

Instead of a traditional ground floor entrance, residents enter the home on the second floor via a walkway leading to a wooden deck. Beneath this deck is a semi-basement level, serving as the first floor. Inside, the practice adopts a dynamic skip floor system, meaning that some floors do not line up directly with others, creating a link between the rhythms of the exterior stairs and the interior layout.
